Durham County Attorney Chuck Kitchen
has announced he will retire effective
November 30, 2009. In a correspondence delivered to the Board of Commissioners
Kitchen wrote, “I have truly enjoyed my time working as County Attorney for
Durham County. I can honestly say
that I have had the honor of working with many excellent hardworking employees.”
He will retire with over 31 years of local government service.
Kitchen began his legal career with Durham County
Government as a law clerk while a student at the University of North Carolina at
Chapel Hill School of Law School. Upon graduation he was named as Assistant
County Attorney. He held that
position until 1986 when he was hired away by Alamance County Board of
Commissioners as County Attorney.
In 1996, Kitchen returned to Durham County as County Attorney.
During his tenure Kitchen has advised the Board of
County Commissioners, County Manager and department heads on all legal matters
related to the operation of County government. His office is responsible for
seeing to it that affairs and actions are conducted in accordance with federal,
state and local laws. He also manages a legal staff of eighteen employees.
Kitchen says he will work with the Board and County administration to “help make
the transition as seamless as possible”.
