This
year is a municipal election year, and four city council positions will be on
the ballot. These positions include the mayor and three council member positions
from Wards I, II, III. All candidates are required to file a notice of candidacy
and pay a filing fee. Candidate filing
will be held at the Board of Elections office beginning Monday, July
6th at 8:30 AM and end on Friday, July 17th
at Noon.
The
mayor is elected to serve a two year term. Candidates must be 21 years old and a
resident of the City of Durham to be eligible to participate. Candidates for
mayor must also pay the $221.73 filing fee.
Council
members are elected to serve a four year term. Candidates must be 21 years old,
a resident of the City of Durham, and a resident of the ward that they wish to
represent. Council candidates must also pay the $188.35 filing
fee.
Voters
may cast ballots for all 4 races—the Mayoral and all three Ward races. If there
are more than two candidates for any of the 4 races, there will be a primary
election for that race on October 6, 2009. The top two candidates who
receive the most votes in each race will move to the November 3rd
ballot.
