DURHAM—Reading is Fundamental, the nation’s
largest children’s literacy organization, has named Durham County Library’s RIF
program July’s Program of the Month. The library provides 5,000 children of all
ages with two RIF books every summer and has participated in RIF for more than
30 years.
Durham County Library uses its Summer Reading Club
as a way to focus children and families on reading. The library gives away RIF
books during the Summer Reading Kickoff event in June, and again during the
Summer Reading Finale which will be held on August 15, from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. at
the Main Library.
“The library is a hub of excitement for summer
reading,” said Karlene Fyffe, youth services manager and RIF coordinator for the
library. “Summer reading involves thousands of young people. It’s the perfect
time to get books into children’s hands. In addition to encouraging children to
check out books at the library, we love the look on children’s faces when we are
able to give them a RIF book of their very own. We are thrilled that our library
was recognized as a RIF Program of the Month.”
RIF’s Program of the Month initiative was launched
to honor the ongoing efforts of local programs to fulfill the mission of RIF,
which depends on programs like these to promote children's literacy.
Durham
County Library provides the entire community with books, services and other
resources that inform, inspire learning, cultivate understanding and excite the
imagination. For more information, visit your local library or visit us online
