DURHAM’S YOUNG PEOPLE TAKE ON 2009 LOCAL ELECTIONS

Youth Candidate Forum, Candidate Guides, and Voting Spearheaded by Students

Durham’s young people are educating themselves and adults about the Mayor and City Council candidates and making their own voice heard by casting their own ballot.  Durham youth are engaging in local elections in multiple ways including:

  • Young leaders are hosting a Youth Forum for Candidates 6:30 pm, Thursday, October 29, at the Holton Center, 401 N. Driver St.  Young people – and all Durham citizens – and invited to attend; but only youth get to ask the questions at this event!  Questions for the candidates can also be submitted to info@kidsvotingdurham.org or by calling 560-7321.

  • Students can cast their own ballot on Tuesday November 3 at a precinct with a Kids Voting station or high- and middle-schoolers can vote online at www.kidsvotingdurham.org now through 7:30 pm on Election Day, November 3.  Any young person under age 18 can vote at a Kids Voting booth or online, even if their parents have early voted.

  • Youth Candidate Questionnaires and  Guides created by the students of Durham School of the Arts’s Octagon Club are available for young people, educators, and adults alike to use to see where the candidates stand on issues that are important to our community’s young people.  Visit www.kidsvotingdurham.org or call 560-7321 to get copies.

Durham’s young people who aren’t old enough to vote still have experiences and ideas about key election issues and their own opinions about the candidates”, says Kids Voting Board Member and volunteer Pam Jordan-Carrington.   “Kids Voting is a great way for youth to make their voices heard on Election Day and beyond.”

“Kids Voting offers an opportunity for young people to get involved in the election and voting process early on so they remain engaged as adults,” says Kids Voting’s Carolyn Kreuger.  “As a community, we need to be involving our youngest citizens and listening to them.”

Individuals, families and groups are still needed to help staff Kids Voting Polling sites on Election Day, November 3.  Call 560-7321 or email carolyn@kidsvotingdurham.org for more information.

Kids Voting Durham is a program of Durham County Cooperative Extension and an affiliate of Kids Voting North Carolina and USA.
